The waters were flowing peacefully on the shores of Narragansett.  The wind felt very calm to the touch.  The beach seemed very empty, except for a few seagulls here and there.  Plus, one other creature.  A human.

John walked silently on the shoreline, with thoughts in his head.  To him, the calm beach air made him feel relaxed, and at peace.

"Nice and peaceful today..." He said to himself, smiling softly as his gaze turned towards the ocean, the waves gently crashing against the sandy shore. "Makes me feel like I'm right at home."

In his early twenties, John seemed smart for his age.  He always wore glasses, despite the fact that he could see fine without them.  He was rarely ever seen with his navy New England Revolution hoodie, which he wore today.  But the most amazing thing about him is that he gets friendly with other animals and creatures around him.  And he can understand them too.

"Perhaps I should set down soon, have some lunch..." He thought, looking behind him at the backpack of food he was carrying with him. He looked around for a nice spot where he could sit down and eat, but before he could do that, he heard a noise in the distance. Looking ahead of him, he saw what looked like a pair of small creatures sitting on top of a rock. He couldn't really tell from this distance, but they looked like they were crying, hands covering their faces.

"What the..." he thought, as he took off running for the rock.  What had been thoughts that made him relaxing and peaceful, now turned into thoughts of surprise.  "What could be wrong?" he thought to himself as he kept running.

As he got closer, he was able to make out the shape of the two figures sitting atop the rock - a lone pair of Oshawott. The two of them were quietly sobbing away to each-other, and as he got closer still, he saw that the bodies of the Sea Otter Pokémon were covered in cuts, scratches and a few burns. The two looked like they had been through a lot, and it was amazing that they even had the energy to cry.

"Oh Arceus..." He said sadly as he knelt down beside them.

As he knelt down, one of the Oshawott looked up at him.  Despite such a cute face, and a body that looked scratched as if it had come out of a rough battle, it looked sad, tears running down its face.

"Oh, my poor Oshawott," John said to the pair, "What's wrong?"

"Osha....Oshawott..." One of them tried to speak, trying to find the strength to get its voice above a dull whisper as the other one took over speaking. "Oshawott, Oshawott! Osh-Osha!" It spoke to John with a hint of panic and fear in its voice.

"Ok... you're saying that the two of you were just minding your own business, and from out of nowhere you were attacked by some fiery beast?"

"Wott Osha!" It nodded its head.

"Do you have any idea of what it is that attacked you? I mean it's obviously a Fire-type, but do you know which one?"

"Osha..." It responded.

"I'll take that as a 'no you don't..." He sighed.

At the same time, a look in the Oshawott's face made John think hard.  The first thought that came into his head was what happened to their parents?  They must've been killed by this fire beast.  And the scars on the Oshawott must have come from them trying to save their parents.  Now they must be out here crying because they have no one else to take care of them.  This gave John an idea.

"Hey, I got an idea," he said with a hint of happiness in his tone, "How about if I start taking care of you guys?  I promise you I will never let you two get hurt."

"Osha...?" They looked at him curiously, wondering what he meant.

"You don't have anything to worry about, I'd ensure that the two of you are well looked after, and I'd get you treated the first Pokémon Centre we find."

"Osha-sha..." They still sounded unsure.

"Look, I might not be your real parents, but I don't want to see either of you in pain like this... please just let me take care of you for a little while, and if you want to, you can stay with me."

"Sha....Oshawott, Oshawott!" They smiled up to him, gently cuddling against his sides as he pet their heads.

John smiled as well.  He knew that this day was already getting exciting.  "Hey, you two.  How about we play in the water first?  I mean, I need a little rest too."

"Osha!" They seemed pleased.

The trio got themselves off the rock and into the water, just after John took off his shirt.  They had so much fun splashing each other.  One of the Oshawott even created a little orb of water and sent it hurling at John.  It hit him right in the chest, knocking him back into the water and sending a strange feeling through his entire body.  John didn't really pay attention to it.  After all, he was having fun.

They spent a good hour or so in the water, just playing around and having fun. As they did, John noticed that the water was helping to heal the Oshawott, their burns and bruises fading as they became a bit more lively. John couldn't help but smile as he watched the two of them - obviously he'd still have to take them to a Pokémon Centre to get them fully healed, but it was nice to see them happy.

"So are you two feeling any better now?" He asked them.

"Oshawott, sha-shawott!" They grinned happily to him.

"Great!" He smiled to them.

While they were playing, John had begun to grow a little tired.  He noticed his arms slowly grew weary as they continued to splash around.  The Oshawott, however, never seemed as exhausted as he was.

"Alright, you two," John said.  "Ready to go?"

"Osha!" They nodded, approaching him as they hugged up to his legs.

"That's good." He petted their heads. "The Pokémon Centre isn't too far from here, so as soon as we reach it I'll ensure that the two of you are fully healed up, alright?" He told them as they smiled happily to him, responding with a loud, happy "Oshawott!"

"Perfect." He smiled as they suddenly climbed up his sides, sitting on top of his shoulders. They purred softly as they looked at him with a broad grin. "Lemme guess, the two of you are only now just tired out from all the fun you've been having?" He chuckled. The Oshawott duo just blushed a little, rubbing the back of their heads nervously. "It's nothing, really. I can handle your weight, just let me get dried up and back into my clothes beforehand." He said, the two Pokémon jumping back to the ground as they let him dry himself off, getting his clothes back on as he collected his gear.

"Ok, now I'm ready to be your taxi." He smirked, the Oshawott wasting no time in getting atop him again.

As they began their walk, thoughts entered John's mind.  It looked as if the Oshawott had quickly grown to like him all of a sudden.  He imagined himself playing with the pair on the beach for hours, perhaps building a sandcastle together.  He smiled as his thoughts progressed.  He could also imagine something else, but it appeared very vague, like it could just be waiting for him around the corner.
"We're nearly there now" John said to them. "We'll soon have you back to full health in no time at all!" He told them both, the two Pokémon grinning wide.

Before he could do that though, a plume of fire headed right towards him. John had barely any time to react as he jumped out of the way of the blast, falling on his back as the two Oshawott landed near his head. "Owww... what on earth was that?" He asked, pushing himself back up to his feet as he saw a giant wall of fire in front of him. "Seems like we might be in a little bit of trouble..."

"Oshaahha...." The two little otters trembled in fear as they clung close to the human - they were attacked in a similar fashion, and they knew all too well what was about to come their way.

"Grhurauha....." A low growl emerged from behind the flames, a large, quadrupedial creature staring down John and the Oshawott. It was a strange creature, parts of its body covered in metal, a pair of fiery red eyes glaring at them through the flames.

"Hoo boy... I'm guessing this is the 'fire beast' the two of you were talking about earlier on?" He asked the two frightened Pokémon.

"Oshawott! Oshaaaa..." They nodded frantically, clinging to the young man for dear life.

"Don't worry about a thing you two," John exclaimed.  "I got this."  The Oshawott nodded in response, still with that hint of fear in their eyes.  "Just find a safe spot for now while I take care of your little 'fire beast.'"

The Oshawott nodded, and ran behind a nearby rock, all while John approached the creature slowly.  John knew this was going to be a difficult challenge, but he was brave.  He knew the Oshawott loved him so much he could protect them, but he had to prove it to them.  "Hey, big guy!" John snapped, growing slightly furious at the beast. "You wanna fight?"

The creature just stood there, growling at John.  The Oshawott, poking their heads out from behind the rocks, just sat there in surprise, and managed to duck back behind the rocks as the fire creature blew a puff of smoke on John's shirt, causing it to burn completely.  This made him even more furious, yet surprised when he saw that light blue fur had begun to sprout on his body, and continued to spread.

"That was my best shirt!" He yelled, charging towards the creature. He knew that it most probably wasn't the best idea, but he had to protect the two Oshawott from harm! He leapt towards the creature, fist outstretched....

*KLANG!*

Probably wasn't a good idea to do that either as he recoiled, pain shooting through his arm as the creature swept him backwards. Black fur was starting to spread over his hands and wrists, claws growing from his fingertips as he pushed himself up again.

"Owwwww...." John held his hand in pain.  "That hurt!"

"Osha!" The Oshawott looked scared, as if they thought John was going to put himself in the same situation that the pair went through only moments earlier.  "Oshawott Osha-sha!" They began to cheer him on, as if he was to become their hero.

For a split second after, it seemed as if John's head was going to explode.  His fury continued to rage as the creature tried to blow another puff of smoke in John's direction.  John easily got himself out of the way as the light blue fur continued to grow throughout his arms.  "You dare try to... Wott... hurt my friends?" he snapped.  "I think it's time we... Wott Dewott... taught you a lesson!"

The beast looked on with a bit of concern, looking at the slowly changing human as it began to charge up another attack. John jumped back onto a nearby rock, looking ready to attack himself as his legs covered in the same sky-blue fur, black fur growing over his feet as they slowly stretched, the toes fusing into three digits as a bump began to form on the base of his spine.

"Dewott... you want, beast," John snapped. "I'm in no... Wott... mood to have my friends badly hurt."  Just at that moment, he noticed something out of the corner of his eye.  It looked like two yellow scalchops, small, compact, and seemed very sharp.  Noticing this, John grabbed the two shells, just as his pants ripped open.

"Osha-shawott!" One of the Oshawott cheered him on, as he threw one of the scalchops at the creature like a boomerang.

The creature let out a growl of pain as the shell-like object struck it hard in the face, sending it reeling as it stepped back a little bit, the scalchop returning to John as he grabbed it. "I'm only just getting... Dewww...started!" He grinned, throwing it again as he struck it in one of the forelegs.

"GHURRAHH!" The beast roared, falling forwards as it looked at John, deep blue fur starting to sprout over his waist as the bump began to push outwards, pushing into a thick otter tail. With a hiss, the creature let loose a fireball, aimed at the half-changed human.

The fireball struck John in the chest, as he was pushed back towards the ocean.  "Owwwww... Wwwwwwott!" John held his throbbing chest, the fireball creating less damage on him.  "That... Dewwwwww... really... Wott... didn't hurt that much."

"Osha oshawott!" The Oshawott continued to cheer, as a pair of whiskers began to sprout on John's face.  He grinned, knowing that the Oshawott love him, and would do anything to keep him healthy, just as much as he would do anything to keep them well cared for.  At the same time, John felt weird all over as his new water powers started to kick in.  Feeling this, he put his paws together and formed a ball of water.  The Oshawott looked amazed as he sent the ball flying towards the beast.

"Come on...Dewott! I'm nowhere near finished with you yet!" He grinned, his nose sinking slightly into his face, turning a reddish-pink as his teeth grew a little longer, pushing into sharpened fangs. His eyes grew a little wider, turning a blackish-green with thin pupils as his ears moved to the top of his head, covering in black fur as they grew to points. To finish it all off, his hair grew a little longer, a thick tuft of blue fur lining the back of his head.

"Osha-oshawott!" the Oshawott cheered him on as he continued his struggle with the beast.  As it continued to blow smoke on him, John continued to maneuver his way around the creature, the smoke not appearing to bother him.  With another feeling of confidence and power inside him, he once again took out his scalchops and thrust them at the beast's side several times.

"Grrrgggghhh..." The beast growled, taking more and more damage as it tried to back away from the now humanoid Dewott, struggling to keep on its feet as it leapt backwards, preparing to charge as it decided to go for an all or nothing suicide attack, great plumes of fire flowing from its mouth as it bared its fangs, roaring at the top of its lungs as it charged towards John.

But John was not ready to give up just yet.  As thoughts of the Oshawott loomed in his head, he gathered up all his energy in his paws and used it to create a ball of water.  It was the same ball of water that one of the Oshawott splashed him with only moments ago.  With confidence building, he continued building his energy until the sphere was just the right size for him.

"This is for... Dewwwwwww... my friends!... WOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTT!!!" he cried, releasing the sphere from his paws and hurling it at the creature with a great force.

He released the sphere just in time - the fire beast was mere inches from John as it was struck by the move, letting out a shrieking roar as it was hit, collapsing in a heap as it skidded across the ground, its head half submerged in dirt. "Grrhh...gruuuhhh..." A weak growl left its throat as it passed out, eyes closing.

"Ghh....Deww.....there...." John panted, looking over the defeated monster. "That's what you get for trying to harm my friends..." He smirked, turning back to face the two Oshawott.

"Oshawott! Osha-osha!" They cried out happily as they ran towards him, jumping as they clung to his chest, nuzzling him affectionately. John blushed a little bit, petting their heads with his pawhands.

"I don't think that thing's gonna attempt to try hurting either of you again after this." He smiled to them.
"Osha!" They cried in glee as they licked his face happily.  John knew right there that the Oshawott finally cared for him and that he's finally treated as a parent.

"Hey, what do you say we go play some more?" John asked the pair.

"Osha-oshawott!" They said happily.

------------

From then on, John and the Oshawott continued to live together on the beach as a family.  The three of them continued to play and train together, without any distractions.  While they played, John seemed to notice the Oshawott were enjoying themselves, as did they.

On many occasions, the trio built huge sandcastles with perfection.  One of them would use their water powers to create a little moat around the castle, to the others' happiness.  After they were done, they would watch as either one of them knocked it over or the waves tore it down.  They would smile, and proceed to either build another one, or play in the water.

There were a few occasions where people would stumble across the trio, taken aback slightly by the human-like Pokémon. Of course, any concern they had was quickly put to rest when they saw how close he was to the two Oshawott, thinking that it was just a normal Dewott that had undergone a slight growth spurt - or that it was someone in a very convincing costume.

To John, it seemed like a big change that took him by surprise.  But to the Oshawott, there was more.  They liked John, and John liked them.  And the three of them knew that this bond would surely never break.
